Biography
First elected in November of 2002, State Representative Eddie Washington made history by becoming the first African-American in the General Assembly to represent the Waukegan-North Chicago area.
Hailing originally from East St. Louis, Rep. Washington has lived in the Waukegan area for almost 20 years. Since his arrival, he has been extremely active in efforts to improve the community by working with local officials and community organizations. He is even the founder of an activist group, P.O.W.E.R. (People Organized Working for Equal Rights).
Washington has also worked with the Lake County Urban League as former Director of Employment and Economic Development and was the director of the Waukegan Township Staben Center. He is also an active member of Lake County's NAACP and John Howard Association.
Washington is a friend to the labor community. When not fighting for his district's best interests, Washington is watching out for commuter safety in his job as a Metra conductor and a member of the United Transportation Union. His experience and dedication to the best interests of working families are reflected in his legislative priorities.
Washington also played a significant role in the construction of two new greenhouses on the campuses of Neal Math and Science Academy and Jefferson Middle School. These greenhouses will offer new educational opportunities for students who are interested in agricultural sciences.
His legislative agenda includes providing an economic stimulus program for the Waukegan-North Chicago area. In particular, Washington wants to bring shoppers back to the community by encouraging new businesses to open along such areas as North Chicago and Waukegan's Tenth Street Corridor.
Representative Washington currently serves as the Chairperson for both the Prison Reform Committee and the Aging Committee.
