Thapedi believes that for young people to compete in the global economy, they must have a quality education. He is fighting to bring more state dollars home to local schools, reduce class sizes and invest more money in early childhood education. Thapedi supports education reforms that will ensure fairness in the way schools are funded and close the education funding gap that exists between wealthy and less affluent communities.
Thapedi is working to get guns off our streets by pushing for an assault weapons ban and is supporting efforts to expand after-school programs and other community anti-violence efforts.
To turn around our economy, Thapedi backs new incentives for companies to come to Illinois and create good paying jobs. He also favors expanding worker retraining programs to help those who are unemployed to develop new skill sets and become more competitive in our global economy.
In the 96th General Assembly, Thapedi serves on the House Civil Law, Infrastructure and Public Utilities committees.
Thapedi began his career in public service as an intern with the Cook County State’s Attorney and the Law Department of the Chicago Transit Authority. He spent eight years as a trial, corporate, and transactional attorney with the major Chicago law firms of Earl L. Neal & Associates, LLC (now Neal & Leroy, LLC) and Swanson, Martin & Bell, LLP.
Presently, he is a partner and founder of the law firm of Thapedi & Thapedi, where he represents both injured persons and businesses in complex civil litigation. Thapedi also serves as the managing broker for Shore Realty, LLC.
In addition to his professional work, Thapedi serves his community through tutoring underachieving students, conducting seminars in senior citizen buildings and retirement centers, and sponsoring a free legal clinic in the Englewood community. He also serves as the general counsel for several non-profit organizations.
A lifelong resident of Chicago, Thapedi is a graduate of LeMans Academy and St. Ignatius College Preparatory High School, Morehouse College, and the John Marshall Law School. He is the son of Isaac Martin Thapedi, a Chicago neurosurgeon and Llwellyn Thapedi, a retired Cook County judge.
