Biography

Michael J. Madigan was elected Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives for the 97th General Assembly on January 12, 2011. He has served as Speaker since 1983, except during the years of the 89th General Assembly (1995-96). Representative Madigan was elected House Democratic Leader in 1981 and 1995. He served as House Majority Leader from 1977 until 1981.

Madigan’s work in the Legislature has been consistently marked with honors and distinctions from a wide range of civic, community, educational and business organization. The Chicago Sun-Times twice rated him as one of Illinois’ “Ten Best Legislators”. The respected Illinois Issues magazine once cited Madigan’s accomplishments in naming him one of the state’s 10 outstanding citizens

Madigan has been at the forefront of the passage of landmark legislation over his years of service to the people of Illinois. Under his leadership, the state has enacted tougher ethics laws to rein in abuses of corrupt public officials and employees, crackdowns on predatory home lending, reforms at the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority to prevent the loss of conventions and restore the integrity of the economically vital facility, sweeping pension reforms to protect the fiscal health of Illinois for generations to come, and the first campaign finance limits in state history. Madigan also initiated impeachment proceedings against former Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who was later impeached by the full House of Representatives and removed from office by the state Senate.

Voters in the 22nd Representative District first elected Madigan as their delegate to the 1970 Constitutional Convention and then as State Representative in November 1970. He has won re-election in every election since 1970.

A graduate of Loyola University Law School, Speaker Madigan practices law in Chicago.

Speaker Madigan was born April 19, 1942, in the southwest side district he now represents. A life-long resident of Chicago, he graduated from St. Adrian Grammar School, St. Ignatius College Prep and the University of Notre Dame. Speaker Madigan and his wife, Shirley, have three daughters (Lisa, Tiffany and Nicole), a son (Andrew), and two granddaughters.
