System Biography Paul Froehlich was appointed to serve his first term as the 56th District state representative on February 3, 2003. His district includes most of Schaumburg and Roselle and parts of Elk Grove, Hoffman Estates, Rolling Meadows, Hanover Park and Bloomingdale. As a former high school teacher of 13 years, Froehlich is dedicated to improving education in Illinois. He knows how important it is to provide educational opportunities to every child and plans to continue addressing educational disparities as a key part of his legislative agenda. He chairs the House Committee on Disparities in Educational Achievement and is committed to exploring methods to close the achievement gap that threatens the potential of so many students in the state. His experience as an educator gives Froehlich the background knowledge necessary to find solutions that provide real results in our schools. He recognizes that fully educating all of our students is vitally important to the Illinois economy. Froehlich is dedicated to improving the quality of Illinois’ environment. He has worked to raise awareness of the dangers of pesticides to vulnerable members of our communities and has proposed requiring the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to inform citizens of pollution violations near them. As a member of the Environmental Health Committee, he has voted to prevent BP from increasing the amount of ammonia and suspended solids dumped into Lake Michigan. A major priority for Froehlich is increasing public safety throughout the state. He has been the Secretary/Treasurer of the Legislative Fire Caucus since 2004. He is the Director of the DuPage Railroad Safety Council and co-sponsored a law that established automatic enforcement of railroad crossing violations. He has been a leader in promoting safety on our roads, strengthening DUI laws and placing more restrictions on teen drivers. He was a Founding Board Member in the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists from 1982 to 1995. His commitment to public safety has been recognized by the Illinois State Crime Commission, where he has been a board member since 1997. He received an Excellence in Government award from this group in 2006 and was named the “Civil Servant of the Year” in 1996. In 2006, he received the Legislative Award for Outstanding Leadership in the General Assembly from the Associated Firefighters of Illinois and was named “Illinois Legislator of the Year” by the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association. Before becoming a state representative, Froehlich held several other public service positions. He served on the District 54 Board of Education from 1989 to 1993, served as a Schaumburg Township School Trustee in 1997 and 1998, and served as Schaumburg Township Assessor from 2002 to 2004. Froehlich has a long history of community involvement. He has served as the Chairman of Standby Local Draft Board for 20 years. He has also been Chairman of the Schaumburg Village Scholarship Committee since 1994 and a member of the Schaumburg Police Pension Board from 1996 to 2003. Froehlich has a B.A. in Political Science and a M.A. in History, both from Northeastern Illinois University. He has also completed 30 hours beyond the Masters in Education. He and his wife Marilyn have three children.
