Marcus C. Evans, Jr. represents the 33rd District in the Illinois House of Representatives. He is serving his first full term after being appointed to fill the vacancy of former State Rep. Marlow Colvin.

As state representative, Marcus is focused on advocating for working adults to continue their education, creating better job opportunities and providing a quality education for our children.

Working with children, Evans knows how important a quality education is for student success. He supports efforts to increase students' time in the classroom and will work with parents and educators to make sure our kids are given the tools they need to succeed. To help create better job opportunities, Marcus will work with city and community leaders on bringing new jobs, construction projects and new employers to our area. Marcus knows that a strong community depends upon safer streets, so he will work to crack down on violence and law breakers, fight for common-sense gun laws, and work to increase security in our neighborhoods.

Marcus is a cancer survivor since 2006, after battling the illness as an adolescent. In an effort to highlight awareness and assist in the fight against cancer, Marcus joined the American Cancer Society's Cancer Action Network, traveling nationwide to advocate for quality healthcare legislation and cancer research funding. Since 2009, Marcus has spoken publicly at various health and cancer advocacy groups throughout Illinois; sharing his personal conquests in the battle with cancer and encouraging others to get involved.

Marcus is a life-long resident of the 8th Ward and an active civic leader. He previously served two terms as treasurer of the Cook County Young Democrats and is a member of Compassion Baptist Church, Southeast Calumet Heights Homeowners Association and the 800 East 88th Place Block Club. Prior to becoming state representative, he worked as Deputy Chief of Staff for Alderman Michelle Harris.

Marcus is actively involved in the local community, including directing the 8th Ward Democratic Organization Summer Sports Program and teaching basketball and cheerleading skills to children from the Chatham, Avalon Park, Grand Crossing, Calumet Heights and South Shore communities. Marcus regularly volunteers at several annual community events, including parades, picnics, senior citizens' proms, and holiday events. Evans also serves as an IHSA sports official with the Metropolitan Officials Organization and the Central Officials Association, licensed in basketball and football.

Evans is a graduate of Morgan Park High School in Chicago and is working towards his B.S. in Mathematics at Chicago State University.
