Biography

State Representative James D. Brosnahan has proven to be an effective legislator and strong voice for the people of the 36th District, which includes all or parts of Oak Lawn, Evergreen Park, Chicago Ridge, Hometown, Palos Hills, and Chicago's 18th and 19th Wards. Representative Brosnahan was sworn-in for his sixth term in office on January 10, 2007.

Now in his sixth term in office, Representative Brosnahan has taken a leadership role on key House committees. As Chairman of the House Telecommunications Committee he will oversee the rewriting of laws governing the regulation of landline telephone, cellular telephone, and internet service, which are set to expire this year. Rep. Brosnahan is the chief sponsor of House Bill 1500, which will authorize statewide video franchising. This legislation will bring about much needed competition to the current cable television providers. Increased competition will bring lower prices, better services, and more options for consumers. Brosnahan's work on the House Judiciary I Committee has involved negotiations to solve the state's medical malpractice insurance problem. The committee primarily deals with civil law issues, including those pertaining to real property, domestic relations, and children and family law.

Brosnahan believes in being open and accountable to the people he represents. To meet this commitment, he has a constituent service office in Oak Lawn, and hosts seminars on a variety of issues of interest to residents across the 36th District.

A life-long resident of the district, Brosnahan attended St. Germaine grammar school in Oak Lawn and Brother Rice High School. He received his B.A. from Loyola University and graduated from Loyola University School of Law. Prior to his election, he served eight years as a gang crimes prosecutor in the Cook County State's Attorney's Office. He now resides in Evergreen Park with his family, and is a member of Most Holy Redeemer Parish. He and his wife Janet have four children, Tierney, Jimmy-, Quinn and Julia.

Brosnahan understands the needs of the people in his community. He is committed to making our neighborhoods a safe and prosperous place to live and raise a family.
